Coverage options

Four common kinds of coverage.

These overviews are educational, not personalized advice. The right fit depends on your situation and the carrier's underwriting.

Term Life Insurance

Coverage for a set period — often 10, 20, or 30 years.

Term life provides a death benefit for a specific number of years. It's typically the most affordable way to get a larger amount of coverage while your responsibilities are highest.

Who it may be appropriate for: May suit people with a mortgage, young children, or income their family relies on for a defined stretch of time.

Whole Life Insurance

Lifelong coverage with level premiums and cash value.

Whole life is designed to last your entire life as long as premiums are paid. Part of each premium builds cash value that grows on a guaranteed basis set by the carrier.

Who it may be appropriate for: May suit people who want permanent protection, predictable premiums, and a conservative savings component.

Universal Life Insurance

Permanent coverage with flexible premiums.

Universal life is permanent coverage that can let you adjust premiums and death benefits within limits. Cash value growth depends on the policy type and carrier terms.

Who it may be appropriate for: May suit people who want lifelong coverage with more flexibility, often as part of estate or business planning.

Final Expense

Smaller whole life policies for end-of-life costs.

Final expense policies are smaller permanent policies intended to help cover funeral costs, medical bills, and other final expenses. Underwriting is often simplified.

Who it may be appropriate for: May suit older adults who want to keep loved ones from shouldering funeral and final costs.
